The athletics program at Archbishop Walsh High School is one based on history and tradition, and is chock full of Eagles pride.
BOYS' VARSITY BASKETBALL
The boys’ varsity basketball team has won 10 or more games every season since 2001. It won the
Expressway Conference championship in 1997 and 2003 and finished runner-up in Cattaraugus County Division III the last two years. In 2003, under the guidance of John Karuch, the Eagles won the
Monsignor Martin A Division in Buffalo, and advanced all the way to the New York State Class C Catholic
School championship in New York City. Head coach Emil Ash, a 1965 Walsh grad, aims to see they
return.
BOYS' VARSITY FOOTBALL
The varsity football team has made five-straight Monsignor Martin Association playoff appearances
despite having the smallest roster in the league. In 2004, the Eagles made it to the MMA championship game at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park and finished the season 6-4. Walsh has put three seniors in the annual Don Raabe Big 30 Charities Classic three of the last five years, and in 2006 the Walsh coaching staff led the New York team. The Walsh football team is coached by Dan Smith and John Butler, a ’72 grad.
GIRLS' VARSITY BASKETBALL
The girls’ varsity basketball team finished a glittering 71-18 series of seasons from 2004-2007, capturing three Cattaraugus County Division III crowns in that span. It finished atop the Big 30 Small School standings twice in that time while establishing a school-best 22 wins in 2007. Three girls have reached the 1,000 point mark since 2004, the first three females in school history to accomplish the feat. Brad Emery coaches the Lady Eagles.
BOYS' VARSITY BASEBALL
The varsity baseball team won the Expressway Conference championship in 1998 and has since been
competitive every year in the Expressway Blue and Cattaraugus County Division III leagues. The baseball team is coached by Walsh grad Oliver Smith.
GIRLS' VARSITY SOFTBALL
The varsity softball team took the Cattaraugus County Class D crown in 1999 and has since been competitive each year in that league. Dan Smith also coaches the varsity softball team.
SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD
Walsh High School won the Basketball Officials Team Sportsmanship Award in 2000-2001.
