HISTORY AND TRADITION

The athletics program at Archbishop Walsh High School is one based on history and tradition, and is chock full of Eagles pride. The tradition of Walsh’s athletic excellence began in the school’s earliest years, but truly hit the Western New York scene in 1968 when the boys’ varsity basketball team beat everyone from Buffalo to New York City on its way to a perfect 18-0 record and Walsh’s first Manhattan Cup title.

The Eagles would make 11-straight Manhattan Cup playoff appearances, win six Bishop Smith League (Buffalo) titles and rank in the top-10 in the state four times. From 1967-1971, the Eagles varsity football team compiled a record of 31-1 and captured four-straight Smith League titles. Again in 1968, the football team surrendered just 12 points for the season while establishing numerous Western New York records, some of which still stand today.
